On Tuesday, Vélez held a meeting with Guillermo Barros Schelotto, former coach of Boca, following the resignation of Sebastián Domínguez after losing 2-0 against Huracán in the eighth round of the Torneo Apertura. The team's performance led Fabián Berlanga, president of Vélez, to seek a new coach.
After winning the Liga Profesional de Fútbol in 2024, Vélez Sarsfield is currently in the last position in Zone B of the local championship, accumulating six losses and two draws in eight matches, without having scored any goals. Given this situation, the club's management contacted Barros Schelotto, who expressed his desire to coach an Argentine team and also compete in the Copa Libertadores.
After informal conversations, a meeting was held at the coach's house in La Plata, which turned out to be positive. If negotiations progress, Vélez and Barros Schelotto will need to agree on contractual and economic terms. With the Paraguay national team, the "Mellizo" managed 17 matches with a record of four wins, four draws, and nine losses, before being dismissed in September 2023 due to poor results.
Despite this, Barros Schelotto has in his history the conquest of the Copa Sudamericana 2012 with Lanús and the two championships of Boca in 2017 and 2018.
